What metal hypersensitivity is
Metal hypersensitivity is an allergic response triggered by contact with particular metals. Nickel is by far the most common trigger, followed by cobalt and chromium — all of which appear in various alloys.
Reactions vary. Some people get mild skin irritation. Others experience dermatitis or more persistent discomfort with prolonged exposure. It affects a very large number of people, and for those it affects, it isn't a minor inconvenience.
Why stainless drinkware comes up
Nickel is added to stainless steel to improve durability and corrosion resistance. That's why it's used so widely — in cookware, cutlery, and drinkware.
Food-grade stainless steel is considered safe by regulators, and we're not suggesting otherwise. But for someone with a nickel sensitivity, the calculation is personal rather than regulatory. If you react to nickel, you'd generally rather your drink weren't sitting against a nickel-bearing alloy for eight hours a day.
